Now that new research has shown it is not dangerous to eat in labor, something home birth midwives have known for eons, here are a few foods many women find comforting as well as nourishing during their labors. Not all women want to eat during their births, so you will not have to force food (unless you have not eaten in many hours; your baby needs to eat, too!). When women vomit, they may think they will simply throw the food back up, so why eat, but vomiting is often a sign of low blood glucose and eating can help alleviate the problem. Many of these foods will be for women birthing at home or when women are in early labor before going to the hospital.

As always, talk to your care provider about whether you will be permitted to eat throughout your labor and birth.

1. Scrambled Eggs - Eggs are a wonderful protein as you work hard to birth your baby. They also sit gently in the stomach. With a piece of toast, you have a balanced protein and carbohydrate meal. Carbs are energy foods, so they are always good to eat with a protein food.

2. Peanut Butter Toast - The protein of the peanut butter is paired with the carbs of the bread. The more whole grain and chewy the bread is the better it is for you.

3. Bagel and Cream Cheese - Once more, protein for strength and carbs for energy. Some women find flavors like garlic or onion to be too strong, so opt for a whole grain or a berry bagel. The same thing can be said for the cream cheese; choose a milder rather than stronger type. Simple is a good thing!

4. Soup - Almost any kind of soup is a good choice, but bean soups tend to be too heavy. But if that is a comfort food for you, do not hesitate to choose them. Most women will have chicken noodle soup or chicken and rice, something gentle in the stomach. Adding crackers (whole grain is the better option) gives some crunch and, again, carbs to the meal.

5. Protein Smoothie - This is a great choice when the idea of food is unappealing. Using protein powder (whey, dairy or even egg if you have a milk allergy) added to juice, milk, fruit and sometimes peanut butter added makes a high protein, high carb alternative to a heavier meal. You can sip it every few contractions and it will slowly energize you if you are having a longer labor.

6. Granola or Protein Bars - These, too, can be bitten slowly in between contractions, giving you the energy you need to continue. So many options exist with protein bars, you could spend some prenatal time trying different ones out to find the ones you like the best. The more protein in the bar the better, but having one you like is even more important. If you are in the hospital, sometimes this is the only option.

7. Crackers, Cheese and Fruit - Ah, those carbs and protein mixed together again. Whole grain crackers, your choice of cheeses and fruits such as grapes, watermelon or cantaloupe make for a wonderful (and colorful) plate you can munch on over time. Each flavor complements each other and you can even feel like you are the queen of the dinner party, being served the best snacks of the house.

It is obvious that all the foods should sit well in your stomach. If something sounds awful to you when your provider suggests you eat, try something else. Foods in labor can bring you more than just nutrition, they can also bring you a great deal of comfort.

Why Gelato is Good For You

Psst...want to know what's even better than ice cream? Gelato, of course! Why? Ounce per ounce, gelato has significantly less fat than ice cream. Compared with regular, American-style ice cream, which goes at 10-18% butterfat, gelato makers add in 4-8% butterfat when making gelato. The fat-stinginess of the gelato maker is great news for those of us who are trying to limit our fat intake.

Additionally, gelato's low fat content means that, when you eat it, you get to taste other things besides just the fat. Regular ice cream coats your tongue with fatty acids, tryglycerides, and sometimes even trans fat. These fats block the flavors from reaching your taste buds. Regardless of whether the ice cream is packed with strawberries, pistachios, espresso, or exotic ingredients like green tea, if fat hits your tongue first, all those delicious flavors will go unappreciated.

However, it's not just the low fat content of gelato that makes it so great. Because of the way that the gelato maker mixes the concoction, gelato contains much less air space than regular ice cream. By volume, gelato contains 35% air, with a premium gelato maker like Ciao Bella packing in only 20% air. In contrast, regular ice cream contains 55% air volume or even more. Why is this significant? Because more air means significantly less flavor.

Why is there so much air in ice cream? In order to answer this question, think back to the fat percentage of regular ice cream. If you take any liquid mixture (which is how ice cream starts out) that contains almost 20% fat, and then you freeze that mixture, guess what happens? You get a solid piece of rock! For this reason, as much air as possible is whipped into the ice cream slurry before it is frozen. The air that is nestled between the pockets of fat maintains the ice cream in a semi-soft state. This is also why, if you happen to let your box of ice cream melt in the car and then re-freeze it, you get a solid chunk of non-servable cement back.

Gelato, on the other hand, does not have this problem. Consisting of minimal fat, it is best maintained at temperatures just at or above freezing (for example, 30F). There are special gelato freezers used by gelato makers and gelato machines that maintain gelato at this temperature. This is also why, if you buy gelato to take home, you should store it in the warmest place of your freezer, such as the side shelf.

Because gelato does not require actual freezing, it is not as cold, and thus more flavorful, when it hits your tongue. Really cold ice cream, which is sometimes served at -20F, tends to numb the taste buds. You can probably think of at least a few individuals in your life that let their ice cream warm up to the point of melting- and for good reason. With gelato, there is no need to wait. Your gelato maker has already made sure that your gelato comes naturally warmed up and ready to eat. And best of all, your gelato contains a lot less fat.

You may have noticed that most premium brand gelato is rather expensive. Not to worry: you can make your own healthful gelato using a simple gelato maker. Cuisinart is best known for the appliance that bears its name - the Cuisinart. OK, so it's technically a food processor, but most people seem to refer to it by name, even if their appliance is a Kenwood or Hamilton Beach.

Who says "Chop your parsley in your Hamilton Beach?"

No one, that's who. But "Knead your dough in your Cuisinart"?

You see my point?

The company, made famous by this iconic appliance, only began branching out into other small kitchen appliances in the 1990s. By then, however, its name had become synonymous with top of the line quality.

Does this carry over to its ice cream makers? Yes.

Cuisinart makes over half-a-dozen different of these machines, but except for one, they are all variations on the same thing - electric gel canister models. ( Learn more about the many different kinds and how to choose the best ice cream maker one for you.)

As long as you have a well designed gel canister - which Cuisinart does - there's really little that can go wrong with an electric ice cream maker. These models work by freezing the canister in your freezer overnight before you can use the appliance. You then set the canister in or on the motorized part of the machine, insert a paddle attachment, cover the machine and turn it on. Then pour in your ingredients through the spout in the cover. Twenty to thirty minutes later, you've got dessert.

Electric models are simple to use, simple to clean and for the most part, pretty affordable. They also churn out good results in 1 to 2 quart quantities, depending on your model.

So why does Cuisinart make so many different ones? A one quart and a two quart model should be sufficient, no?

Not according to Cuisinart! There are 1-quart, 1.5-quart and 2 quart models. Some are styled to look like old-fashioned freezer buckets, even though they aren't. One is a soft-serve maker - it makes exactly the same thing as the other machines, but has a tap to dispense it through, so you can pretend you work at the Dairy Queen.

What all these models have in common, in addition to the type of machine they are, is that they are solidly built. They provide quality at a reasonable price - which is why you'll see them on every food blog out there.

And then, there's the top of the line Cuisinart ICE-50BC model, a self-cooling compressor machine that's aimed for gourmet cooks who don't like to plan ahead (and have a little extra money to spend.) This kind of appliance takes away the need for pre-freezing a canister. It has a built in refrigeration unit, so you can just toss everything in, turn it on and walk away. The really cool thing about this one is that it's one third the price of the next cheapest compressor model on the market and nearly as good.

If you've read the rest of the info here, you know that we've already praised the pros of the Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker, so there really isn't any need to rehash everything.

However, here are a few things that I haven't mentioned.

The fact that you don't have to keep the bowl in the freezer so that the unit is good to go whenever you want it is a huge advantage to me, and a lot of other people.

If you've used other ice cream makers, you know that in many cases you need to use a lot of rock salt, and that keeping that from destroying your machine can be a problem. Salt is corrosive, after all. The ICE-50BC does not require ice or salt, and in my opinion this is a big plus.

Now, on to the cons...

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker ICE-50BC Cons

At nearly 33 pounds, this machine is pretty heavy, so those considering it should take that into consideration. If you have back problems, or just aren't very strong, you might want to make sure the ICE-50BC is placed somewhere where you never need to move it again.

Many complain that the ICE50BC is loud, and I guess it is, but it's no louder than other appliances I have. Some have placed it in a main floor laundry room or any other out of the way place so that they don't have to listen to it while its running.

If you like your ice cream rock solid, you will need to put your finished product in the freezer before it's hard enough for you.

The transparent, plastic lid could be designed better and be a bit sturdier, so be sure to take care with it. I can see where it could break very easily if you don't take it easy when removing it, or trying to secure it.

As per the manual, the Cuisinart ice cream maker will stop churning when the ice cream has reached maximum thickness. The problem with that is that the "maximum thickness" can be reached before the ice cream is really done. I think the problem with this is that the ice cream tends to freeze up around the sides and the plastic paddle begins to have a problem dealing with it, hence the machine stops itself. I haven't been able to determine yet if this only happens with certain recipes, because this does not happen all the time

The following points are not problems per se, but things that the manual say you must follow, and if you don't you will have problems.

You must keep the unit in an upright position at all times, although I can't see how you would do otherwise, unless maybe when storing it. In line with this, since you don't know what position the box was shipped in, it's a good idea to let it sit upright for a day or two before using it the first time. I know you want your ice cream right away, but you could be disappointed if you don't follow this step. Not sure what happens to the machine if it's on its side, but that doesn't matter. I just do what the manual says.

Do not put any of the parts in the dishwasher.

I finally broke down and bought a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker and I've got to tell you, I'm glad I did. I have a family of 10 and being able to make two quarts of homemade sherbet, sorbet, and frozen drinks is a real treat.

As I said, I have a family of 10, so we needed a pretty hefty Cuisinart ice cream maker to keep up. We went with the ICE-30BC which I have to say, is pretty well made. It's rugged, looks killer, and works like a charm.

The only flaw is, you have to freeze the bowl for a good 24 hours in order to get your creation to the proper consistency.

The Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker company has another model that I've got my eye on. It's a commercial Cuisinart ice cream maker and it has its own, built-in freezing chamber. That means, no bowl freezing. Just turn it on and 30 minute later, ice cream!

The down side to that is, it's $300. BUT, I also found a similar maker (another brand) for $700 so I guess it's not that bad.

Let me tell you a little bit about the history of this frozen confection, I think you'll find interesting.

The Emperor of Rome (Nero) was credited with having sent his servants into the mountains to collect snow. This was then mixed with nectar, fruit pulp and honey. Sure, it wasn't as convenient as a Cuisinart ice cream maker, but it must have been a tasty treat!

No one knows for sure the origin of this fantastic frozen delight, but in the 13th century, Marco Polo came back from Asia with recipes for 'water ice'. Apparently the Asians had been using them for thousands of years.

Italo Machiony had a cute little pushcart where he sold his homemade frozen dessert on Wall Street. He invented a waffle cone to keep people from running of with his glass cups and patented his idea in 1903.

No matter what you call it, or who made it, whether it contains fruit, nuts, chocolate, or peanut butter (my favorite) you really do need to be able to make your own. Not only is it a bit less expensive, but there are NO preservatives and you can put exactly what you want in it.

The Fully Equipped Kitchen: Great Things Every Home Cook Should Own

The kitchen is one of my favorite places. Short of having a Viking stove, my kitchen is highly outfitted. I have all the gadgets I need to make melon balls, ice cream, chimichurra, lemon zest, or grilled paninis. Are all of these items necessary? They are if you like to cook. Since I like sharing product information, the kitchen shall not be overlooked. I won't go heavy on things like a KitchenAid mixer (that everyone who loves to bake should have) or a Cuisinart 14 Cup Food Processor (for anyone who loves to cook. Period.) But rather, I shall highlight some not so obvious choices. (For my friend S., the kitchen is that room with the fridge.)

Beater Blade (for KitchenAid mixer): For people who love to bake, the counter top KitchenAid mixer is the zenith. This windshield wiper style beater is just what Dr. CooksaLot ordered.

Flexible chopping mats: Toss out that old wooden relic (that is full of germs by the way). Put one of these superflex mats down: Chop, bend, and all your mushrooms, rosemary, et al go sliding nicely into your pot. Plus, they are easily thrown in dishwasher. Since you get two for about $6.00, you can discard when you have overly abused them. I found mine at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Silpat Cookie Sheet Liner: Hey friends who bake, get this. I got two from Williams Sonoma. NOTHING will stick to this liner. Even my high tech cookie sheets have given me hiccups here and there when my perfect cookies needed encouragement to disengage. These mats are worth every penny. I use my large one on the counter too for rolling out dough for pizza, cinnamon rolls etc.

Shark 2 in 1 hand stick/vac: When you see this thing, you might snicker. It looks like it might dismantle should it be too close to a butterfly's wings. It is also 9.99 at Target. However, put all your dismay aside. This bagless wonder will shock you and become your favorite took in the kitchen. Face it, your floor is gross. I don't care who you are. If Martha Stewart used the Shark in her kitchen, she would be appalled at what she found. Piles of dirt, cracker crumbs, and for me, hair. For even the pickiest of kitchen cleaners. And even with a little helper spreading crumbs, the Shark can not be outdone.

Cuisinart Smart Stick Hand Blender (also called immersion blender): This fabulous handy device whips, blends, or purees your small jobs right in the bowl, pot, or dish. Love it. And I use it daily to make protein shakes. And it is perfect for making "Cream of" soups.

Vinturi Wine Aerator: this device aerates your wine in seconds. We tried it first hand in Napa, and were believers. Great for those who love big red wines (like we do). Your Cabernets and Zins will thank you.

Microplane Grater: Originally used for smoothing wood, who knew how great they would contribute in la cucina? Super handy for parmigiano, chocolate, lemons, limes, even fresh nutmeg. Super easy to clean. Nothing tops pasta like a few shivers of fresh parmigiano over the microplane. Its hand held and very long and then so your tender digits need get no where near the razor sharp planes. And it is great for zesting chocolate over desserts. Trust me.

Orka oven mitt: Made of silicone and able to withstand up to 500 degrees, this is the hand protector of all hand protectors. And, can be handily thrown in the dishwasher. Your old ratty oven mitts stained with red sauce and burnt on the edge from touching a burner can't make those claims, can they? I have two and can't live without them.

LiveStrong by Chantal Travel Mug: Because I am not a coffee drinker, Ive never been big on the travel mug. That didnt keep me from collecting dozens when I worked at PeopleSoft but its not a handy device for me. Even when I used them for tea, lots of little sloshing and spilling, no matter how "airtight" they claimed to be. And then the Live Strong version graced me with its presence and now, I am hooked. (And actually, our friend MA gave it to John but it looks so much better with me.) This is the absolute best travel mug. Period. I used it in Vegas and hot water poured in at 8 am was accidentally forgotten about until almost lunch time. The water was still hot. Not lukewarm and tolerable. HOT. Beautiful and now I use it for tea multiple times a week.

The Cuisinart DBM-8 Burr Grinder is provides an highly consistent grind at a very reasonable price. It does have flaws, but once it is viewed against products that are 2x its price. I will caution that it is not easy to clean the "guts" of the machine so this may not be the machine for you if you plan to grind a variety of coffee styles or spices. Trust me if you burr grind fresh vanilla coffee beans and then follow it with a bold French Roast... your French Roast will have an unexpected flavor! Pros - - Inexpensive - Multiple settings for grinding - everything from fine to French Press coarse. - One-button to push then you are able to walk-away - Not much to clean - but clean-up is a snap. - 1/2lb bean capacity - Nice finish - it does not look "cheap". From the looks you would expect that it cost 2-3x the actual price Cautions- - Again, it is impossible to clean the inner-workings of the machine so you will have residual that will be mixed into your next grind. - Not overly powered - at times it seems like it is straining which makes me worry about long-term durability. - Pretty loud - I am not sure if it could be made "quiet" - Pretty large footprint - you may want to make sure that you have counter-space Final Verdict - I may change my review if the Cuisinart DBM-8 dies a quick death, but for now it has surpassed my expectations. There are better burr grinders available, but be prepared to spend considerably more money. 5 Stars

Must Have Kitchen Appliances

There are enough small kitchen appliances on the market that, assuming you had the cash, you could use a different one each night for dinner for an entire year. With this in mind, I've narrowed down the most critical ones to the three that I most frequently use. Two of them are very similar, but do very different things; and the other is a low-tech tool that can be used for nearly every meal.

Food processor - I have two food processors that I always use. A 3-cup KitchenAid Chef's Chopper and the 14-cup Cuisinart Custom 14 food processor. Both of them get equal use, but for very different things. I love to make peanut butter and hummus with the large one, and sauces, dressings, and bread crumbs with the small one. Both machines are built like tanks and have had no issues during their lives.

Blender - In essence, a blender does nearly the same thing as a food processor. It uses a blade to mix and chop food. Have you ever tried to make peanut butter in a blender? It doesn't work. The biggest use for a blender (aside from margaritas) is turning chunky sauces in to smooth, creamy ones. This is critical for making pastas, jerk sauce, and BBQ sauce.

Microplane - a microplane is an extremely low tech invention that functions like a cheese grater, but works much more efficiently. There is a plastic adapter that slides onto the microplane that allows you to slide back and forth without scraping your finger tips, a very smart $5 investment. With a microplane you can grate garlic, onion, and carrot so thin that they melt in the saute pan, which is perfect for starting any pasta sauce.

These three small kitchen appliances are the cornerstone of any meal at my house, and they should be the same at yours.

I had decided that I wanted to buy a medium-size worktop toaster oven, primarily I was more interested in the oven element as opposed to its ability to toast. The thing that really appeals to me about the Internet is it gives you the ability to do a huge amount of research into anything that you are thinking of buying and opens up a whole host of information ranging from discount sites where you can buy what you are looking for, to true customer reviews of the product from people who have actually bought and used the product.

One of the problems is that because there is a whole plethora of information it can be very time consuming and there is no real way to shortcut the whole process. Once I actually started doing the research I found that it is very easy to go off on a tangent and start looking at other things that aren't really related to what you are trying to investigate however, having overcome that obstacle and focusing my concentration I quickly came to some conclusions.

My initial budget was roundabout $250 and during my search I had found a number of reviews of the The Cuisinart TOB 195 toaster oven and it quickly became the focus of my attention. I looked at the Amazon site and found, to my surprise, that they were offering this item for sale $138 which represented a 58% discount on the usual price.

This was just too good an offer to miss so I quickly had a scan through any comments I could find about the oven and then went ahead and purchased it. What surprised me was that this oven was actually being sold on Amazon as a used item for $136 dollars whereas it was possible to buy it at $138 brand new, I know, don't ask me!

I have used Amazon for many years now and enjoy buying from their site not only for the quality of products and the actual delivery but also from the fact that you are able to track your delivery through their site and we all know that you can buy from them in complete confidence.

I've been using the oven now for over six months and I am delighted with its performance, it does, as they say, "do what it says on the box". I tend to have very a varied home routine so meal planning isn't really one of my strong points so I am particularly pleased that the oven is capable of reaching optimum temperature in less than four minutes, this means that I can slip in a pizza without having to wait ages, and although a worktop oven it can take a 12 inch pizza, which suits my lifestyle and tastes perfectly!!.

The only two niggles I found with this product is that it does not have an inside light and dependent upon where you place it in the kitchen you may find it difficult to see into the oven, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what the manufacturers were thinking of in not putting an inside light in. The other thing that I find is that the removable crumb tray is accessed from the back of the oven, this means that you have to pull the oven away from the wall to remove it. It's no great hassle as it means I use the opportunity to clean the work surface underneath it but, it can at times, be a bit of a pain.

The pan that is supplied with the oven is a good sturdy strong one and has a slightly concave centre, which is a great idea as it allows any juices to runaway however, as you have to to tilt the pan slightly to get it into the oven you have to be careful that you do not slop any juices over the side.

The Cuisinart TOB 195 toaster oven comes with a very comprehensive manual which includes a number of really good recipes for you to try. All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase of this oven, its sleek stainless steel finish gives it the air of a piece of professional kitchen equipment and, of course, the Cuisinart brand is a well-respected one which, when combined with the Amazon site makes the whole package very attractive, even more so this excellent discounted price.

I should go and snap one up at this price!

If you're looking for a high quality toaster oven at what I can only say is a superb price of just $138 then you need to act on it quick because it isn't going to be around for long at this price.

Kitchen Safety - Avoiding Burns in the Kitchen

There is always a danger of getting burned in the kitchen, by its very nature a kitchen presents hazards from heat producing appliances that can result in a nasty burn. Ovens, hotplates, hobs, grills and kettles all produce enough heat to give you a burn if you are not careful. This article addresses ways in which you can minimize the risk of burns in the kitchen to yourself, your family members, guests and pets.

You should never hang kitchen utensils behind the stove, hot plate or grill. This is because when you reach over to get a utensil you might have to reach over a hot saucepan or other hot surface and put yourself in danger of getting burnt.

If your hob or hotplate has front and back burners or elements then always use the back ones when you can and turn the saucepan handles away from the front. This prevents children, pets or yourself from getting burned by brushing against or knocking over a hot cooking utensil. Never leave hot items like spoons or ladles near the edge of the work surface where a child or pet could reach them.

Do not cook while wearing artificial nails. If you are handling hot food and pans they can get hot and melt while still attached to your fingers. This can give you a nasty burn.

Tell your children that cannot touch the oven door. Only touch the oven door yourself by using the handle and always use oven gloves or a towel. Having an eye level oven is a good idea. Not only is it easier to use but it also keeps the hot door out of reach of small children.

If you have long hair do not just tie it back in the kitchen. Tie it up in a bun or wear a hat. The same goes with clothing. Roll up your sleeves if they are long to keep them from catching on fire from a hot surface.
